911 - Hair Moisture In Your Refrigerator!

Are you experiencing DRY brittle hair? Well, the moisture you need can be found in your refrigerator and cupboards. Seriously, you do not have to go out an purchase expensive products that are laden with chemicals and unhealthy additives to get the moisture that your hair is in need of.

Let me explain why I am even discussing this topic. I have embarked on a hair growth challenge for the months of May, June, and July. So I wanted to prep my hair for the challenge, but after removing the extensions that I had in as a protective style, I noticed how parched my hair felt, so I washed and conditioned my hair, did the LOC (liquid, oil, and cream) method to add moisture, but my hair remained dry and wiry. After that failed to work, I decided to do a hot oil treatment several days later, but the effects of that was short lived. Finally this Saturday after working in the yard, I decided that it was timeout for playing around, and time to go back to the old school remedies of what works, because I want to give my hair every opportunity to be great during this challenge, and I know that moisture is one of the MAIN components for hair health and growth. I opened the fridge to see what was available and the first thing staring at me was the Mayonnaise. There was an avocado also, but I really wanted to eat it instead of wear it, so mayo was the alternative. Mayonnaise contains healthy ingredients for hair like soybean oil, lemon juice and vinegar. The fatty acids and vitamins in mayo have the ability to seal in moisture and boost shine to hair follices. I moved on to the cupboards and found a jar of honey and extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). Honey has emollients that smooth hair follices and add shine to dull hair. Honey also has humectant properties. Humectants bond with water molecules and adds moisture to dry hair. EVOO is a holy grail product for all hair types. Olive oil is high in antioxidants, monounsaturated essential fatty acids and vitamin E. Palmitic acid, oleic acid, squalene and terpenes are emollients that are also in olive oil. Emollients act as a natural conditioner and helps decrease snagging and tangles. Vitamin-E fights off free-radical damage from sunlight and pollution. These three ingredients together are packed with hair and scalp moisturizing properties.

So here is how I used these ingredients as a pre-wash moisture treatment. Mixing the ingredients together in a bowl, I added 2-3 tablespoons of mayonnaise, 1 1/2 tablespoons of honey and 1 tablespoon of Extra Virgin Olive Oil. Parted my hair in four sections and slathered it on generously starting with the ends and working my way up the hair shaft. I twisted my hair into four bantu knots and put two plastic Walmart bag on my hair and allowed the treatment to stay on for about a hour while I did some chores around the house. Adding the plastic bags or shower cap helps to hold the natural body heat from your head inside of the cap creating a natural warm steam that allows the hair follices to open and receive all of the yummy goodness. You could sit under a dryer if you prefer, but I'd much rather multi-task, conditioning my hair and getting other things done around the house... You decide what works best for you. This could be a part of your self care routine where you allow yourself to pause, while allowing your hair to soak in the goodness under a dryer, and read a book or peruse your social media accounts. Let's move on shall we...

So I feel the need to back-up a few steps. What I have failed to tell you thus far is that when you begin to put this mixture on your hair, it will feel sticky and your hair may feel more wiry than before you started, but relax because once the heat starts to build under the cap this will all change. Do expect some drips on the forehead and down the back of your neck, it's all a part of the process.

After about 45 minutes to a hour, rinse hair thoroughly. You should notice that your hair feels soft, supple and hair should be easier to detangle. All that is left to do is follow-up with your regular wash and condition routine and voila, your hair should be moisturized, soft, and managable. You can thank me later for saving you unnecessary money on expensive chemical laden products. Make sure that you retain this moisture by following your wash routine with all natural oils and creams like those found on Natural Caramel Beauti's website www.naturalcaramelbeauti.org. There is no use in wasting all of that effort by allowing your hair to dry out or by adding chemical laden products back onto your scalp and hair.

It's that simple. Enjoy keeping a few coins in your pockets and soft managable hair. See you on the blog!
